Flowers for the Princess

She had the world in the palm of her hand
On a pedestal she stood.
She studied her books and worked so hard
As any princess should.

One day this little princess
Merely twelve years old
Saw a serpent in the woods
He whispered as she strolled.

"I have some little flowers
I eat them when I'm sad.
These flowers are magical!
Eat some too, or forever wish you had."

The princess thought the serpent strange
And hurried on her way,
But when she slowed and looked around,
There he was again.

Smoothly said the serpent,
"Why do you refuse?
By eating little flowers,
What have you got to lose?"

The princess thought it over
And found she couldn't agree
But uneasily she took them and thought,
"These flowers can't hurt me."

She ate those little flowers
And fell to the forest floor
She liked the feeling of them,
And later came back for more.

From that day on the princess walked
Through the woods each day
She'd find the serpent with the magic flowers
And in the woods she'd stay.

She couldn't get enough of them.
She ate and ate and ate.
Until she started to realize the harm,
By then it was too late.

The royal family tried to help her
They couldn't stand the thought
Of losing their precious princess
But still the flowers she sought

Finally one day in the woods,
The princess on the floor
Swallowed her last flower and found
She couldn't breathe anymore.

Enough's not enough, no, t'was never enough
For that princess renegade
And forever on the forest floor
That little princess stayed.

Author's note:
GOD this took me forever. It was sort of inspired by BloodRush's Man and Water. But yeah, most of the poems I write take me next to no time. This one: FOREVER! Tell me what you think and if you get the big idea behind it. Thanks as always for reading. I love you guys!
EDIT:: This poem was my first published poem. :)
